I just got WinTV TV tuner and when I do a scan for channels, it does not pick up any channels.
I have tried it with my DirectTV cable installed to the tuner card, from the reciever to the tuner card, and without the DirectTV and I get no channels.
Is there something wrong with the card? Or should I uninstall and reinstall the software???
Have you had this problem before?
Plug the output of the Direct TV Box to the TV Tuner and set the channel accordingly on the TV Tuner on the computer. You will need to control the Direct TV Box with it's remote control, or use the Software that came with WinTV to program the Hauppauge control to be able to control the Direct TV box also.

Would the card be able to control the digital cable box? i'm confused as to how that would work. I want to be able to record the tv coming from the digital cable box with a tv tuner card and then output that signal with a s-video cable to the tv.
If you install a tuner card specifically designed for XP or Vista media center, such as one of the Hauppauge MCE cards, it will come with a remote control, USB IR receiver, and IR blaster. The IR blaster sticks on the front panel of the STB over it's IR receiver. The PC controls the STB through the IR blaster. Output to your TV has to come from your video card. If you don't have a TV output, such as an S connector, you'll need a new video card. There are tuner/video card combos, but you have to be sure that both the tuner part and the video part are MCE compatible. There are some combo boards that are only compatible on one or the other.
You can also get boards that have their own software and approximate the MCE capability, but none of them can match the MCE TV gude.

You can watch one TV show while recording another, or record two TV shows while watching a pre-recorded show simultaneously. Or listen to, pause, and replay FM radio broadcasts. I need a tv tuner for my laptop. I bought one and it only shows me non- cable channels. I can watch cable channels only if I attach the tv tuner to the cable box. I don't want to have to do that. I heard if you have windows media center that you have tv tuner. But I don't think that is true because you cant watch live tv. Can someone please help me?

usually a laptop does not come with a TV tuner, there are very few that have it but it will usually known by looking inside you system hardware list. Another way is by seeing a connection that you can connect a coaxial cable to. one would have to buy a tv tuner card to fix inside your usb or regular slots or express pci slot. I am not sure which one you have. I hope you really look into the different options that are out there and choose the best one that fits your needs.
I have a analog tv tuner card for my PC but the channels come in fuzzy at best. I am using an amplified antenna and don't have cable(nor do I want it). I do have it on a desk with a desktop stereo system, cordless telephone, monitor, and printer. I also have another tv nearby using rabbit ears. Could something be interfering with the reception?
Tuner cards are not particularly sensitive-meaning they need a strong signal to function properly. My guess is that your signal is to low in power.

it's like a tv in your computer, you have to hook up the cable to it and it's exactly the same as the tv cable. they are easy to install if you are comfortable going into the box. make sure you get the right kind, you can get Windows Media Centre ones that only work with that, and then you can get all the other ones that work with regular XP. I need this because I see that this is is cheaper than buying a tv. Whats the best and cheapest tv tuner for the money (about like $50)? The government is accepting requests for $40 off coupons for digital to analog converters which will change over the air digital TV from an antenna into analog for old TVs. Each household is eligible for two coupons. The converters are expected to be available at many store in February and cost $60-$70 before the coupon reduction. What is the difference between a single and dual TV tuner?
A dual tuner t.v. is a Pitcher in a pitcher, you can watch two different channels at the same time, or watch one and record another.
If I get a tv tuner, would I need to have cable or satelite before hand? Or would I be able to use it without it?
It depends on your area. If your in a rural area your probably will need cable to pick anything up. If your in a city, you may be able to get something with just an antenna.
Either way there has to be something (cable, Sat or Antenna) attached to the TV tuner.
The only other thing is to make sure that you have enough ram to be able to run it.
I just bought an 80 dollar WinTV TV tuner, HVR-850 model 1230, and this is the first I've ever used something like this. It works but the audio crackles and pops and the video quality is poor when in full screen. Is this normal or should it be tantamount to my TV's performance?
Is there anyway to improve the audio and/or video quality?
I had the same problem once .... I upgraded my video card & the problem disappeared.
Understand that what's feeding the higher resolution on your TV is not the tuner ... it's the video card.
