Touch Screen?

How does a Touch Screen work
what is the lifetime
who invented it......when?

Touchscreens have become commonplace since the invention of the electronic touch interface in 1971 by Dr. Samuel C. Hurst

There are a number of types of touch screen technology:

Resistive
A resistive touch screen panel is coated with a thin metallic electrically conductive and resistive layer that causes a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing.
Some resistive panels can estimate the area (and hence the pressure) of a touch based on calculations from the resistances.
Resistive touch screen panels are generally more affordable but offer only 75% clarity (premium films and glass finishes allow transmissivity to approach 85%) and the layer can be damaged by sharp objects. Resistive touch screen panels are not affected by outside elements such as dust or water and are the type most commonly used today.

Surface wave
Surface wave technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the controller for processing. Surface wave touch screen panels can be damaged by outside elements. Contaminants on the surface can also interfere with the functionality of the touchscreen.

Capacitive
A capacitive touch screen panel is coated with a material, typically indium tin oxide that conducts a continuous electrical current across the sensor. The sensor therefore exhibits a precisely controlled field of stored electrons in both the horizontal and vertical axes - it achieves capacitance. The human body is also an electrical device which has stored electrons and therefore also exhibits capacitance. When the sensor's 'normal' capacitance field (its reference state) is altered by another capacitance field, i.e., someone's finger, electronic circuits located at each corner of the panel measure the resultant 'distortion' in the sine wave characteristics of the reference field and send the information about the event to the controller for mathematical processing. Capacitive sensors can either be touched with a bare finger or with a conductive device being held by a bare hand. Capacitive touch screens are not affected by outside elements and have high clarity.

Infrared
An infrared touch screen panel employs one of two very different methodologies. One method used thermal induced changes of the surface resistance. This method was sometimes slow and required warm hands. Another method is an array of vertical and horizontal IR sensors that detected the interruption of a modulated light beam near the surface of the screen. IR touch screens have the most durable surfaces and are used in many military applications that require a touch panel display.

Strain Gauge
In a strain gauge configuration the screen is spring mounted on the four corners and strain gauges are used to determine deflection when the screen is touched. This technology can also measure the Z-axis. Typical application include protecting new touch-screen railway ticket machines from vandalism.

Optical Imaging
A relatively-modern development in touch screen technology, two or more image sensors are placed around the edges (usually the corners) of the screen. Infrared backlights are placed in the camera's field of view on the other sides of the screen. A touch shows up as a shadow and each pair of cameras can then be triangulated to locate the touch. This technology is growing in popularity, due to its scalability, versatility, and affordability, especially for larger units.

Dispersive Signal Technology
Introduced in 2002, this system uses sensors to detect the mechanical energy in the glass that occur due to a touch. Complex algorithms then interpret this information and provide the actual location of the touch. The technology claims to be unaffected by dust and other outside elements, including scratches. Since there is no need for additional elements on screen, it also claims to provide excellent optical clarity. Also, since mechanical vibrations are used to detect a touch event, any object can be used to generate these events, including fingers and styli.

Acoustic Pulse Recognition
This system uses more than two piezoelectric transducers located at some positions of the screen to turn the mechanical energy of a touch (vibration) into an electronic signal. This signal is then converted into an audio file, and then compared to preexisting audio profile for every position on the screen. This system works without a grid of wires running through the screen, the touch screen itself is actually pure glass, giving it the optics and durability of the glass out of which it is made. It works with scratches and dust on the screen, and accuracy is very good. It does not need a conductive object to activate it. It is a major advantage for larger displays.

Lifespan verys to amount of usage, and if its for residential or commercial use. You can average about 3 years.

Touch-screen?

Touch-screen makes me feel weird. I don't like it on small devices like phones and mp3 players. It's weird. I like pressing buttons. Is it just me...?

Yes its just you... ^_^

I love touch screen, both my phone and Camcorder are touch screen :)

Personally, I think that if you get used to it, it would not be much trouble. I once had an iPod Touch and I felt the same way but IO eventually go used to it.

What is the best 8mp camera phone with a touch screen?

i am looking for an 8mp camera phone with a responsive touch screen but i am drawn between 2. The LG renoir and the samsung pixon. Both are 8mp and they both have touch screens. The Samsung has a more responsive touch screen, but the LG's camera seems better. I need a phone with a responsive touch screen and a very good camera. Any1 got any views??? Help is appreciated.

personally ı wud prefer the LG Renoir cos not only does it hv a slightly better cam. it also has some features that the pixon doesnt. pixon does NOT hv wifi/wlan and the GPS is for geotagging only. so it doesnt rly hv an advantage over the renoir which also supports geotagging. another important thing is that taking pictures does drain the battery and the pıxon has a worse battery life to start with so u shud b able to take more pics with the renoir.

Will it still work a touch screen cell phone if I put an invisible shield on it?

My phone is a samsung eternity and it's touch screen, however since I would prefer to protect the screen I'm concerned that the touch screen will not fill a thing, since it has a cover. The cover is .3 millimeters thick.

It should be fine. The technology is the same that is used on screen protectors for the Nintendo DS and that is supposed to work with the stylus.

What are the top touch screen cell phones out right now?

I am getting a new plan and need a cell phone and want a good quality touch screen. Do you know the top touch screen cell phones out right now?

Voyager.....IPhone.....thats all i know

Voyager- Is on Verizon

IPhone- I beleive is US Cellular or Singular

apple iphone

I'm not sure.

a voyager.

iphone

Apple I phone is good but I heard it has terrible service.

Or maybe voyager. :)

The Voyager.
Its touch screen, then it opens to a full keyboard.

iPhone and the Voyager!!!! (but the iPhone sux)

1:iphone
2:blackberry
3:lg chocolate

the verizon voyager. i have it and its amazing! its not complicated to use either! its awesome. i love it! i can do anything on that phone!

apple i phone and the treo nd the voyager

Apple iPhone and an Apple iTouch(iPod but better)

i phones are really expensive but they are awesome

There's the Voyager, on behalf of Verizon. Then there's the I-Phone that's affiliated with Att. Or, the new At&t!

So far, those are the only ones!

well the newest one out right now is the verizon voyager.
i have the mint chocolate and am very satisfied with it if u dont mind having that kind of touch screen but if u want a full out touch screen, go with the verizon voyager. also, the iPhone but it has TERRIBLE reception in most places and TERRIBLE service.
hope i helped.
kisses.
krys <3.

the voyager and iphone but get the voyager because it also opens to a keyboard and iphone is TOO delicate!

iPhone. By a long shot. Oh, or an LG Prada (same screen apparently)

i own the new samsung f700 and i'm very pleased with it. the touch screen is fantastic and really is the main feature of the phone, downsides are: mp3 player, lack of user customization and camera not great. the new sony ericsson w960i has JUST been released and i hear thats a very good cell phone too. It depends what you are looking for predominantly in a cell phone
1: the touch screen - Samsung f700
2: the usability and interface - Apple iphone
3: storage and mp3's - sony ericsson w960i

check them out, narrow down ur criteria, oh, iphone can't transfer data via bluetooth, only for headsets, and its expensive. hope this helps!

Apple iPod

iphones suck.
voyagers r AWESOME
and so r venus and they have touchscreen and number pad like normal fone

LG prada
LG voyager
APPLE iphone
HTC touch
LG venus

These aren't in any specific order:

HTC Touch Dual

iPhone

LG Voyager

well it all depends on what you want

First the iphone was nominated the best mult-media phone out their and from the looks of it it is and the safari internet helps to and it has a big hard drive and if you have itunes well their your music.

a good compatitor with the iphone is the verizon voyager it has good text pad and it has internet, music, navagation

The distinctive $295 Helio Ocean has dual-slider controls: You slide it lengthwise to expose a phone keypad, and slide it the other way to reach a full keyboard. It's paired with Helio's cell service, which uses the Sprint network

BlackBerry models are popular with business users for their e-mail capabilities, but the $300 Curve (currently sold with a $100 mail-in rebate) has consumer-focused multimedia features and a camera. It's available with AT&T cell service

For more budget-minded buyers, the Samsung Upstage offers inexpensive multimedia. One side is dedicated to phone usage, while the other is for music and video and sports a larger display. It has GPS, too, but it will set you back only $80 with a two-year cell plan from Sprint

What are all of the touch screen phones that are competing with the iphone currently?

I would like a list of all touch screen phones that have good multimedia capabilities and not bare minimum, 2+ megapixel camera, and can accept 8gb+ of microSD cards. If you list all or all you can think of with these requirements I will for sure pick you as best answer. I really appreciate it and thank you in advance.

for my, the samsung omnia is better than the iphone.

How do I configure my ds touch screen without it taking too long?

Ok my ds touch screen is not right and needs to be configured. However , when I try to configure it , it takes too long even hours but Ive seen people only doing it once around and they got it fixed. How can I configure it so fast ???
It also happens on my brothers ds.

How is it taking hours?

Turn on your system without a game and go into settings and calibrate it. It takes less than a minute, something must be wrong with it if it's taking hours.

How to configure vista to activate touch screen?

I have a LCD monitor and I want to activate the touch screen features in windows. How do I suppose to do it?

How can i make my touch screen phone register my touches better?

I just got the samsung eternity touch screen phone for at&t, and im having problems with the calibration of my touches when typing. it doesnt seem to register them. I've wiped it with a glasses cleaner cloth multiple times but this seems to make it worse. Any suggestions are good.

You can always try calibrating the touch screen by going to Settings > Phone > Calibration. I have this phone and I do not have any issues with the touch screen. Maybe you are used to the iPhone and what to lightly tap it, this phone has a pressure sensitive touch screen while the iPhone has a heat sensitive touch screen. Try using a very small amount of pressure and it should work.

What is the touch screen cell phone that i guess has a mirror?

I guess its from a the hills commercial with lauren..

Its supposed to be a touch screen
And then it can turn into a mirror..

That's the LG Shine. It's not that great cuz the mirror is kinda crappy..
and it's not a touch screen either

I think the LG Glimmer has a touch screen & turns into a mirror but idk where they sell it

Barnes and Noble Nook: Tantalizing but Unfinished Washington Post

The Nook (due for wider availability in January 2010) joins a growing array of e-readers , led to date by Amazon and Sony. The Nook's most directly competes with the Amazon Kindle 2. Both models are of similar size, have similar prices, and are the only models that provide direct-from-device wireless access to each bookseller's e-book store (Sony's Reader Daily Edition will add wireless connectivity, as will other readers to be announced at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show.

Assessing the Nook necessarily involves evaluating storefront access, title selection, and title presentation as much as it does appraising the device itself. And ultimately, despite its progressive design choices and clever navigation tools, the Nook feels like a first-generation product in need of a fair amount of future refinement.

The Nook's greatest design is its innovative use of a touchscreen strip below the 6.5-inch E-Ink electronic paper display that dominates the device. The touchscreen obviates the need for a keyboard or for multipurpose buttons or other navigational aids--such as the Sony Reader Touch Edition's buttons and the Amazon Kindle 2's physical keyboard and five-way joystick navigation. Where the Touch Edition's touchscreen overlay might irk some readers (because text lacks crispness), and the Kindle's buttons might feel retro in the iPhone era, the Nook's touchscreen offers a highly adaptable, context-sensitive means of navigating the device.

The touchscreen also adds a splash to color to a device that remains locked in a world consisting of shades of gray. Beyond being a navigation tool for the E-Ink screen, the touchscreen has an on-screen keyboard for data input (such as for searching or for adding notes) and colorful cover thumbnails that you can scroll through; if you flip past the list on the E-Ink screen above the touchscreen, the E-Ink screen moves to the next page to catch up with where you are in the LCD.

With its launch software, the Nook stumbles in a couple of ways. I call out the launch software in particular because Barnes and Noble says that it plans to fix some of the performance issues through a firmware update. But the anticipated update has yet to arrive (it was initially slated to arrive in the week following the Nook's launch; now the due date has slipped to late December). Until it comes, I won't be able to say whether the sluggish performance is strictly a software shortcoming or whether it implicates one or more of the hardware components along with the software .

Waiting for a page screen to redraw itself on the Nook's E-Ink screen can be a serious test of your patience. In a side-by-side comparison of similarly formatted content, the Nook took noticeably longer the Kindle 2 to change the page. More annoyingly, the screen would blink in and out as it tried to perform this operation. Granted, Amazon's Kindle DX and Kindle 2 (to a lesser extent) do this too, but the Nook is especially slow: It took 14 seconds to open and format the book Up in the Air , for example. That time lag might not sound like a lot, but it feels like an eternity when you're holding the device in your hands.

Furthermore, I thought that having the Nook's navigation controls for the E-Ink display on the LCD screen produced an odd disconnect. If the response time hadn't been so sluggish, I might not have felt that way. But when browsing my book library, I was often stymied by having to put my finger just so on the touchscreen strip of up/down arrows and then having to look up above as my selection moved. When I found something to choose, I would press the nondescript radio dial button on the right of the LCD, look above to see what the E-Ink screen now had on it, and then look below to see what additional navigation choices were available. And all of these recalibrations would occur with a lag (I'd navigate below, but the E-Ink screen would take an unexpected moment or three to catch up).

For those reasons, in the end, having two screens in play simultaneously was a jarring experience: It meant that my eyes had to dart continually from the too-bright lower screen to the more muted, easy-on-the-eyes E-Ink screen. The auto-brightness feature lowers the brightness, but not enough; I had to dial the brightness down manually to as low as 4 to 10 percent to get to passable contrast with the E-Ink screen above.

The Nook's LCD screen makes it easy to jump into the type of content you want, including your daily content, your library, shopping options, what you last read, and settings. You get the sense that no important features are buried in a hidden menu item (in contrast, Amazon has its store link as a menu item, not as something visible on the screen). I also appreciate the page-forward and page-backward navigation buttons (which work in books, as well as in multipage screens) on the right and left: They are easy to push, and you can switch the hand you use for each operation.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 just another touchscreen? Phones Review

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 is a very refreshing angle at the touchscreen design. The edges are rounded and there are wavy metallic patterns on the side. Even the keys look refreshing enough to give the touchscreen factor.

The most obvious feature of this device is of course the large 4 inch capacitive touchscreen which exhibits nice contrast and sunlight legibility. The screen does not produce more than 65,000 colours which is really strange given the extremely high profile otherwise given to this model.

However, it could be that a firmware upgrade to Android 2.0 may be on the cards which would mean then that the phone would be capable of supporting up to 16 million colours. Aside fro that the Xperia X10 does have the best display in the Sony Ericsson line up.

Thanks to both the sensitive touchscreen and the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor the screen responds very nicely. The hardware keys below the screen are very comfortable to work with, the only real design fault is the bad placement of the microSD card under the phone battery and the glossy front which shows fingerprints. The Straits Times AsiaOne
Streaming YouTube videos, browsing the Internet and reading PDF books on this phone is pure joy. Once you get used to the screen size, every other phone with a smaller screen pales in comparison.

The phone's user interface - which runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform - is also well designed. Access to various phone functions is intuitive and all can be accessed from tabs. The interface is customisable: You can move and rearrange the home page tabs as you choose.

People whom I showed the phone to for the first time had little problems navigating its functions, a testament to its polished user interface design.

The HTC HD2 uses a standard USB jack for charging and also provides a standard 3.5mm audio jack. It comes populated with a few default applications like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps and Yahoo Finance. More applications can be downloaded via Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

I would not recommend this phone if you are looking for a powerful camera as the 5-megapixel camera is not cutting-edge compared to other high-end phones.

The HD2 comes with a 1GHz SnapDragon processor and supports every connectivity option you would expect from a high-end touchscreen phone. It can even be used as a Wi-Fi router for your laptop if you have a 3G data plan.

Battery-wise, the HD2 guzzles power and requires constant charging - typically at least once a day over the two weeks I used it. It comes with an 8GB SDHC MicroSD memory card.
