LAPTOP>>>>>>>????????????????!!!!!!?

just bought my FIRST laptop...any advice???

Keep it plugged in when you're not using it.

-MM

use it

Any advice on what?

clean all useless stuff that comes preinstalled.

Dont drop it, and if you do drop it, dont drop it into the bathtup during a bubble bath, it could ruin a perfectly good bubble bath =/

lol have you had a computor before? its the same thing

Pick a good Operating system

dont download mp3s or pics off sites i made that mistake and my laptop has never been the same and also dont charge it too much without taking out the battery it runs it down. :) Have fun with your new laptop

Hi,
Before I answer your question, can you do me a small favor? Next time when you ask a question, please do not overdo it on puncuation. Actually, many people just ignore questions like these! A better question would be: I just bought my first laptop, do you have any advice? Instead of LAPTOP>>>>>>>????????????????!!!!!!?. It makes it easier to answer everyones questions that way.

I recommend the following free software:
Mozilla Firefox- Way better, and more secure than Internet Explorer. http://www.firefox.com
AVG- Free anti-virus and anti-spyware. Just search for it @ http://www.download.com
IE Tab- So you never need internet explorer again. Search for it @ http://addons.mozilla.com.
Ad block Plus- Another great addon to Firefox. This one blocks 90% of the ads on the internet. Search for it @ http://addons.mozilla.com
Open Office- Like Microsoft Office, but free. http://www.openoffice.org

Good luck with your new laptop!

1. get a good anti-virus softwear
2. dont drop it
3. charge it
4. if you want, upgrade the RAM
5. Dont get it wet
6. Clean it when it gets dirty
7. make sure your laptop is not "over clutterd"

And yeah, you will enjoy it, hopefully you did not buy a mac ;]

Is my laptop bag going to be considered a carryon item also along with the laptop?

Im a college student flying home Tuesday for Thanksgiving. Im going to have one carryon and my laptop bag with my laptop, mp3 player, and camera in it also. The laptop bag won't be counted as a separate carryon will it?

The laptop/bag will cound as one carry-on, but you're allowed to take two, so you'll be fine.

it will be counted seperate but every flight ive ever been on let me take it plus another full size carry on

I am also a traveling college student. Yes, they will count it as a seperate carry-on, but most airlines allow two anyways. You should be fine :)

They're considered separate carry ons, but you should be allowed to carry them on flight. Checking in your laptop is risky, so be sure to have them on board with you.

Good luck!

How can I fix my laptop sound card/audio so it works without having to apply pressure to the laptop?

I'm having some trouble with audio on my HP Pavilion zv5255us laptop.

The sound card/audio does work so I know it's not a problem with the drivers, but I can only get sound when I apply pressure to the laptop, usually near the headphone jack. This happens when trying to listen through the speakers and through headphones. I've recently bought a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo to help the situation and it does work perfectly with headphones but I don't think there's a way to have it work through my laptop speakers. As I travel a lot I don't want to have to buy external speakers to listen to audio without headphones but I am willing to do this if necessary. I should also note that I will by buying a new laptop in about a year so I don't want to make any costly repairs/upgrades on this laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

This is most likely due to a bad connection somewhere within the laptop, probably near the sound car or speakers. Your only real option it to pull the laptop apart, and look for lose connections somewhere. It could be a bad pin, lose wire, or a solder that came loose somewhere.

The definite fix for this would be to replace the motherboard. I had a video problem once on a desktop that was very similar, only worked with pressure on the port, I opened up the PC, jiggled some wires and connections, and then it was fine.

How to get laptop to see desktop and its resources?

I bought a laptop and am trying to make it so that I can share files between the desktop and the laptop, and also print from the laptop directly to the printer that's connected to the desktop.

I had a working LAN already with the printer sharing working fine.

Here is the setup:

A cable modem, connected to a linksys router, which has wifi enabled but also is connected via ethernet cable to the desktop PC (windows xp). The laptop (Vista) can connect to the wireless network just fine but cannot see the desktop and therefore use any of its resources. The router assigns IPs to both comps just fine w/ dhcp and both comps can get online. Just can't talk to each other for some reason.

What you'll need to do is download "Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder" to your comp that has XP. That is the only way you'll get the two comps to network together.

Here's the link for the download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

Overview
This package contains the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

all you need is to be in the same workgroup, file & print sharing enabled, then share a folder, nay folder, make one if you want and share it. asl long as there are no firewalls, it should work.
Try browsing to the local PC under my computer and seeing if that works

How do you configure a laptop to connect it to the tv?

I want to connect my laptop to the tv. I need specific instructions on how to configure my laptop. I have an s video cable, and my laptop is a HP Pavilion with Windows XP. I am using a 4 pin S Video cable. The laptop has a 7 pin S Video jack. Does that affect it?

hi....
the 7 pins s-video cable is able to transmit both audio and video signals...so u can watch a movie using the tv speakers,,,,with the 4 pins s-video,,,it will transmit only the video signal....my laptop is supplied with 7 pins s-video port but i use a 4-pins s-video cable and external speakers from the headphone jack...that works perfectly...and u have to push the screen signed button while holding fin to switch between the tv and laptop view....good luck

How do i get my laptop to connect to my wireless network?

I've recently recieved a new laptop from work. I work from home sometimes and need to connect to the internet. My laptop shows that I'm connected to the internet, however I can't get any pages to download. I've disabled the firewalls on the computers, but to no avail. My old laptop, I just plugged in wireless card and it connected fine. With the new laptop, It won't. What am i missing? Thanks!

Your company may be using a proxy server, so for you to be able to connect to internet pages from home (once connected to your wireless) you need to turn off the proxy.
Go to internet explorer, Tools>>Internet Options>>Connections tab>>Lan Settings and unselect the proxy.

For you to be able to connect to your works network you may need to use a VPN to connect to the network and after that you can connect to the internet too, using the proxy server (so the box needs to be checked this time). You will need to get the VPN software from your company.

Hope this helps.

What brand of laptop is good for home use?

I am planning on buying a laptop but need some tips. The laptop would be used at home only (no office work). I am not using it for gaming but for music download etc. Anyone have any tips for a fairly good priced laptop that also performs well. (I know, there are so many of them, but was hoping to get some good pointers on here)

Dell Inspiron 1525 With microsoft windows vista home premium.

I wish to connect my laptop to a battery. How can I do this? What is the capacity of the battery?

I am a travelling salesman. I sell VCDs and CDROMs from my van (mobile unit). I wish to connect my Dell Sempron laptop to an external battery in order to display the CDs to my customers at fairs and exhibitions. Will a regular car battery be able to power my laptop for a few hours each day? Will this supplement the battery that is already in the laptop? Can I connect the external battery to the van so that it recharges when the vehicle is running?

Your best option would be to buy a Power inverter.

What this does is plugs into your Cigarette lighter and converts the power from there into a standard power outlet.

From there, you can just plug your normal power adapter into that inverter and avoid messing with extra batteries and such.

Dell Latitude E4300: A Solid but Unexciting Business Laptop Washington Post

Underneath the magnesium-alloy chassis, you'll find a lot of nuances that make the E4300 a well-thought-out piece of equipment. For one thing, the keyboard is a dream to type on. The keys have a pretty long travel, but it's coupled with just the right amount of click at the end. You'll also appreciate the smart key layout. Half-size F1-F12 keys open up room for generous Enter, Shift, Alt, and Ctrl keys. The arrow keys are also arranged in their logical order right next to PgUp and PgDn for easy navigation through documents, spreadsheets, forms, and Web pages. In addition, the key backlighting is just right, not too dim or too bright.

The keyboard isn't the only thing to like here, as the E4300 sports an excellent trackpad with five buttons, scroll margins, and detailed customization software. And if you want an alternative way to move the mouse pointer, Dell has you covered: The low-profile "track stick" centered in the keyboard is easily manipulated by an index finger. It has good feel and response, but no clicking capability.

A few other buttons on the E4300 are worth noting. One, the slick "Latitude On" button, triggers Dell's branded version of the DeviceVM Splashtop technology , which lets you quickly check e-mail, contact, and calendar info without fully booting up the computer; it's an extremely handy feature for the business traveler. On the downside, the keys for volume control and muting are small, awkwardly placed, and very stiff.

The problematic audio controls aren't a dealbreaker if you're uninterested in multimedia, especially since the E4300 has surprisingly thin sound. In our tests the E4300 produced a lot of clipping on low bass, which is typical for small laptop speakers, but that shortcoming combined with distortion in the mids and highs makes the E3400 barely passable for even basic presentation audio. Listening to CDs and movie soundtracks through the built-in speakers was more pain than pleasure.

You want expansion? You got it. A good selection of ports for peripherals and expansion slots rounds out the E4300. You'll find all the usual suspects, including one USB port, ethernet, VGA-out, headphone and microphone ports, and a combo e-SATA/USB connection. A FireWire mini-port is also included for convenience, but it's probably the only port that you won't use often. On the plus side, the E4300 also has slots for SD Card, ExpressCard, and smart cards.

In today's widescreen world, the E4300's traditional 4:3 screen ratio is less than ideal for watching movies, which is okay considering that this system is more of a workhorse computer. Even so, juggling multiple windows when you're multitasking would work slightly better with a 16:9 widescreen. Thankfully, the LED-backlit 13.3-inch screen has very even lighting from dim to bright settings, and in our tests the default color settings were nearly perfect. Blacks weren't quite as deep as those of some of the better laptop screens we've seen, but overall the E4300's video was quite good: Balanced, accurate colors made watching movies fun, while document and Web text looked quite sharp.

As for raw computing power, the E4300's got guts. Our review unit came with an Intel Core Duo P9400 processor running at 2.4GHz, backed by 3GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory and Windows Vista Home Basic (you can opt for other OSs; prices for the system start at $1299, as of February 3, 2010). The E4300 posted a solid WorldBench 6 score of 98, easily landing in the front half among the all-purpose laptops we've recently reviewed. On the other hand, don't count on the Intel 4500MHD graphics chipset to take you far on most games--it just isn't robust enough. Travelers will appreciate the battery's longevity: In our tests, the E4300 managed to last for 5 hours, 27 minutes with its upgraded six-cell lithium ion battery. Keep in mind that the larger battery sticks out from the back of the chassis, adding extra bulk; fortunately, the arrangement isn't as awkward as that on some other laptops with beefed-up batteries .

Dell offers straightforward documentation that covers basic features and setup along with some fairly detailed troubleshooting sections, but it provides no information about the bundled software. The good but slim software collection includes PowerDVD DX for movie watching, the excellent Roxio Creator for disc burning and backup, and a handful of Dell ControlPoint utilities for setting up security, power management, and data connections.

Dell has been in the laptop game for a long time, and the company's experience shows with the E4300. This model strikes a good balance between portability, expandability, computing power, and battery life. If you're in the market for a well-built laptop that will work nicely on your desk or on a road trip, the Dell Latitude E4300 might be perfect for you.

Alienware M11x Gaming Laptop Launched Zath (blog)
Alienware M11x Ultra-Portable Gaming Laptop Launched

The latest release from popular manufacturer Dell’s gaming branch, is the ultra-portable Alienware M11x compact gaming laptop which they recently showed off at a Dell-Alienware gaming event after it’s initial appearance at CES 2010.

This is an extremely eye catching machine as it’s really pushing the boundaries of gaming PC’s. Usually, when you consider a gaming machine, you tend to think of either a more bulky laptop with a full size 17 or 18” display (such as perhaps the Alienware M17x gaming laptop ), or a bulky desktop roaring away underneath a neon lit desk. However, Dell is out to change that opinion with their latest Alienware branded 11” portable gaming laptop that weighs in at around 4.5lbs.

In terms of specification, this thing is far from a lightweight. Designed for gaming, you expect decent performance and that’s exactly what you get. The processor, just a standard Intel Core 2 Duo (1.3GHz). But the real power within comes when you dig a little deeper. Up to 8Gb of DDR3 memory clocked at 1066MHz will provide extremely good capabilities with regards to multitasking with power hungry applications. Perhaps one of the most astonishing things about this machine is the battery life. Even with such high spec, this gaming laptop boasts netbook style battery length of up to 8.5 hours. However, this is certainly no netbook. Of course, this is ‘up to’ not ‘always’, presumably you can expect that from web browsing. I very much doubt that you could last anywhere near that long playing Crysis or Modern Warfare 2 without scrambling for ‘an alternate power source’ after an hour or two.

In my opinion, a lot of gaming laptops lack hugely in the aesthetics department. However this isn’t really the case with this one. It follows the Alienware traditions of glowing edges and really an all round ‘alien’ theme. However it is tasteful, fairly lightweight and flush. On the other hand, I must mention that although the display is only 11”, it could be argued they could have squeezed an extra inch out of it when you consider the sheer size of the border surrounding it.

The display itself is of high quality, displaying better than 720p on a glossy LCD widescreen screen, but a lot could have been done to improve its ease on the eye. A nice touch they have added on which not only adds to the aesthetic prowess of the machine, but also the usability, is the backlit keyboard which glows an intimidating blood red, much like the slashes carved into the face of the machine.

The machine starts from a pretty modest £749, but as always with Dell and Alienware, you can take it almost as high as you like with extra add-ons, monitors, software or just a little extra juice.

Overall I believe the ultra-portable Alienware M11x to be a completely capable, yet portable gaming machine which is almost ideal for any gaming enthusiast who moves around a lot. Easily hooked up to an external display (perhaps your big-screen HDTV even), is lightweight and of great quality, good value and pretty good looking too. OK you won’t fit in a New York style coffee bar, or sat at the back in a lecture at uni if you’re a student. No you won’t find any multitouch trackpads, or gorgeous bodywork, but this is an exceptional gaming machine. The Alienware M11x is pure compact gaming laptop.
