And what is it that your car DVD player has to do with "Home Theater Electronics", the subject of this forum? I think you want the "Cars & Transportation - Car Audio" forum.

Sony is better than JVC orAlpine.

Sony Xavc1 in car DVD player broken?

I have a sony in car dvd player, and have just noticed it has started making a weird 'whirring' noise. It has a motorised 7 inch screen, and after that comes out it sounds like the motor for it is still going or something. just wondering if anyone had ever had this problem before? and can it be fixed?

the teeth of the wheel are damaged thats why the motor is still revolving and thus the sound - a big problem, regular use will make the wheel damaged which in time can stop the mechanism

recording from a dvd player to a cassette player question?

before i put a dvd player in my car. I had a casette player in my car. I hooked my home audio casette player recorder to my sony dvd player 2 audio connections in the. I recorded my rock dvds music encoded with dts etc. does recording from a dvd or cd to a cassette tape take away from the quality of the source master recordingdvd or cd. example is led zeppelin how the west was won dvd audio then record it to a cassette tape connected directly to the dvd player does the master recording led zep how the west was won loose any of its quality. thanks

Tape cassettes are very narrow and run at low speed, so audio quality has always suffered in that format. Added to the problem is common edge damage (minute though it may be) may normal usage which further reduces quality. Cassette quality is hissy (which led to the innovation of Dolby Noise Reduction), as well as limited frequency response. CD (and DVD) can easily render 20 hz - 20 Khz, while tape cassettes might render about 80 hz - 13 Khz.

Now, in your car, with road noise and everything else, it may not matter (depends on the inside acoustic quality of your vehicle). But strictly DVD vs Cassette, if you can imagine watching B&W TV for a few weeks, and then seeing color TV again, that would be the same dramatic effect as listening to cassettes and then hearing DVD's.

The incredible increase in audio quality of CD's blew away tape cassette technology long before people also gave up their vinyl records.

How can I get my car stereo to play my portable DVD player? Initial DVD-1731?

There is a phones jack, an audio jack, a video and coaxial jack; all 1/4". Is there an adapter I can buy that will go into the tape player for my car stereo? I use to have one for my old Sony Walkman so I could play CD's through my tape player before I had a CD player in the car.

Thanks

Yep ask the dude at radio shack to show you what it looks like.

Well, my mother used to have one that plugs into the headphones jack and has a cord that led to a tape, which could be used to play the sound from your DVD player, so maybe if you just went to your nearest Target or Wal-Mart, you could buy one for a real cheap price, maybe like, $7...

jl a4300 amp question?

my jl a4300 amp has filter freq (HZ) and high pass button.what do i set the filter freq(HZ) and do i set it to high pass. I have 2 mb quart rvf 213 refence in the front and 2 refence mb quart rvf 269 in the back. both sets have crossovers I think they are passive crossovers not sure.my radio is a sony mex dv2000 indash dvd player and it has a high pass 80(hz) and 120 (hz) do i set t sony car dvd player to match the jl amp. I don use a subwoofer just 4 mb quart speakers. thanks

that depends on you if you like smoth bass then turn the hz down if you like dry bass then set it up and if you don't want bass then put t in high pass

since your speakers have there own crossover's, set the radio to passive, or no filter and the amp to full pass

Green tinge when playing a DVD?

Okay well I have a sony TV and a 5 stacker sony DVD player, when the TV is in Analog mode watching it, it's fine, when watching satellite TV or any of the other AV applications it's fine, but when I play a dvd, the screen has a green tinge on it. E.g. when I am watching a movie, what would normally be a white car would now be a greeny tinge, and that tinge covers the whole screen, So if something was red, it would have a greeny tinge to it as well. I don't know what it is but it is annoying, please help someone. Thanks in advance.

What is the best battery for car audio/video.?

I'm planing to place a good car audio on my car, but to make it more "interesting" it will not only have just a small "LCD" on the car, im planing to place one of those car dvd players but, instead of that LCD, im placing a projector, yeap, a video projector. Well my screen will be any "white wall" around town. So, what will be a good batery or configuration that is good enough to power a projector/xbox360/car audio.

Thanks you guys!!!!!!!!!!

(I got a sony audio, with some puny pioneer 40w speakers and 2 bass speakers of 600w, so time to upgrade!!)
Well about the gas part, I leave near the border, so I can get about a gallon of gas for less than 3 dlls...so thats not to much to worry that about, wonder why mexicans are angry about selling their own gas to other countries....

You are going to need to go with a deep cell battery and maybe use multiple batteries. Your standard car audio battery is the optima yellow top. Stinger and Kinetik both make very powerful dry cell batteries which alot of people will use as a second battery. You can use the largest of the Kinetik batteries as a starter battery and as a supply for your needs.

Tech Test Drive: portable DVD players San Jose Mercury News

Savvy business travelers know that battery life is precious, so why waste your laptop's battery on a movie when you can whip out a portable DVD player? Some of these eye-catching little units also provide great backseat entertainment for the kids on long road trips. We're starting to see some competition in the high-res screen market with two players that offer 800x480 resolutions.

Toshiba SDP93S

The good: Large 9-inch screen with 800x480-pixel resolution; SD card slot; MP3, WMA; DivX playback; decent speaker performance.

The bad: No USB port; included remote is a tad large.

The bottom line: A high-res 9-inch screen, solid battery life, SD card slot and DivX playback make this portable DVD player easy to recommend.

Sony DVP-FX930

The good: High-res 9-inch screen with 800x480 resolution; full 180-degree swivel screen; includes remote control, AV cable, and car charger; reliable six-hour battery.

The bad: Somewhat hefty 2.7-pound weight; no USB port or flash card reader; no support for DivX or other digital video files.

The bottom line: The combination of a stunning high-resolution 9-inch screen, long battery life and impressive design makes the Sony DVP-FX930 a winning portable DVD player.

Panasonic DVD-LS83

The good: Portable DVD player with 8.5-inch collapsible screen; excellent digital file support includes DivX, MPEG4,

Minneapolis Police warn shoppers to clean out their cars KARE

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- First you park, and then head out to your favorite store. But while you do your last minute shopping, thieves may be doing some shopping of their own - inside your car.

"These guys are professionals, they're opportunists. They're going to wait for a moment smash a window, grab it, walk away and act like nothing's happening," says Sgt. Jesse Garcia with the Minneapolis Police Department.

"Look at a few cars and I'll bet that 60 to 70 percent of them have something of value in them that someone would want to break in to take," says Garcia.

So Sgt. Garcia took us through a downtown parking ramp, to show us just what people will leave inside their cars.

"This car here, it would lead someone to believe that there was a laptop nearby because there is a laptop power cord sitting on the back seat," says Garcia as he peers through the window of a mini-van.

"It's a Sony PSP," says Garcia as he looks in another car. "That is something that can be easily taken away and pawned."

And thieves will do it just like this. Garcia says they will go from car to car looking for valuables left in plain sight, then open your door, smash your window, even pop the trunk. In as little time as it takes to hide your stuff, a thief can swipe it.

"I usually just cover it and make sure I lock the door before I walk away," says Jaime Kane who just parked her car in downtown Minneapolis.

"The front seat's filled with tennis equipment. It obviously doesn't look like your recreational player because there are a lot of rackets and they're pretty high-end rackets. It's something people could easily break in, take out and pawn right away," says Sgt. Garcia looking into a different mini-van. "This with the laptop inside would be the jackpot of many in this parking ramp."

From portable DVD players to presents left in the back seat, this ramp could have been a potential treasure trove for thieves. So far this year, more than 4,000 thefts from vehicles have been reported citywide in Minneapolis. That's actually down several hundred from last year, but still a lot police say.

"We do suggest people put items in their trunk without making a big display of it. Be somewhat discrete about doing it so people don't see that you're putting items in there," says Garcia.

Or just keep your stuff at home which may likely the quickest route to a crime-free Christmas.

"There are going to be thieves out there, just don't make it easy for them," says Garcia.

Have you switched off your book? Rediff
, Presumably on your computer, you are already someone used to reading on the screen and not necessarily on a page. But so far it has been news, messages and even articles. But soon it will be books. When that happens do we begin to see the end of one of the most enduring and loved products of all time, the printed, hand-held book?

These questions are being debated today with the growing popularity of the Kindle, the e-book reader by Amazon. Kindle was introduced to the Indian market in October, but except for the 'early adapters', a term used for geeks or technology enthusiasts who have to try everything new straightaway, the e-book is nowhere as yet like a cellphone, ubiquitous and indispensable.

Kindle is not the only product either. Sony and one or two major brand names are starting to produce similar devices. It is early days as yet, but have we not seen how fast technology spreads and how what was once regarded as exotic or expensive becomes almost a necessity, affordable or not? For sure, it will take some more years for this to happen with e-books, but whether you like it or not, it is bound to spread.

The printed book, as we know it has been around for more than five hundred years, approximately since the Gutenberg press in 1450. We in India [ -- all this has sensory pleasures and associations which are distinctive and different from that of reading an e-paper.

How much of it is just the memory and how much of it is innate is difficult to tell. But we can already envisage the next generation growing without the good old printed newspaper, seeing only the screen version.

With books it is different. Or so it seemed till now. It is not difficult to deconstruct the appeal of this product and Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, who developed the Kindle e-reader actually spent a long time reflecting on why people love books! Like its simplicity and portability: it can be hand-held, read in a chair, in the bed, at a beach, does not break or bend, is not easily destroyed unless you leave it in the rain, can be stored and retrieved, lent or borrowed at will; you can go back and savour or decipher a passage that you liked in a novel or go to the end and see 'Who the killer is' and spoil for yourself a mystery.

If such are the physical qualities that someone like Bezos trying to remodel the 'product' thinks about, what about the more intangible pleasures that any book lover knows? The feeling of, expectation and intimacy with only you and your new book, in a secluded corner?

As you settle down in your favorite chair or position on the bed with let us say, speculating ahead, Vikram Seth's for which you have been waiting for twenty years now: as you slowly open the jacket, read the dedication with curiosity, admire a handsome, even if balding Vikram Seth on the back cover, and tenderly open the pages. It is like the beginning of a love affair, if you are a Vikram Seth fan like me.

The crisp white pages, the easy and enchanting prose, a whole new universe of fascinating characters and soon you are lost in the subtle pleasures of a book. Or the other sentiments: The turning of pages with satisfaction or impatience, the feeling of accomplishment that you are half way through the book, the satisfaction of having reached 'the end' and putting the book aside on the bedside table.

Going even further, there is enough research today to show that 'reading' a book is a more creative and productive activity compared to 'seeing' its movie version. This is not mere snobbery. Seeing, whether television or a movie is a relatively passive activity in which the moving image grabs you giving little time for pause, reflection or interpretation.

It is moving inexorably forward, even a Satyajit Ray [ ] movie, and the thinking comes later. But with a book, it is a more interactive process: you can stop and reflect, go back a para or a page and ponder, lose the immediacy but not the memory as you analyse it. In short, start a cognitive process that is different from that of seeing and hearing. A 'pause' on the DVD player is not the same as the pause in your reading of John Le Carre to work out the meaning of all that you have read so far.

Can an e-book create the same magic, replicate the same process, if it can be switched on and off?

I hear that most of the experience is being retained and recreated in an e-book like the Kindle. I must add that although my notion of a book is a romanticised version of a favourite novel, books are also text-books, guides, reference manuals, and going beyond what a e-reader provides are not only books, but magazines, newspapers, in short everything that is available in ink, but now on e-ink. So with an e-book, the size and weight of your average paperback, (see the picture here) you don't have just one book, you have a whole library that you have paid for, to be carried in your coat packet. How is it done? A little bit of technology has to be mentioned at this point.

Research shows that people do not want to read a book on the screen like a monitor with its back light and brightness. The requirement then was to create what seemed like a page with ink on it, but without permanent ink. The technological answer developed in the MIT is the e-ink on a special surface called Vizplex, a kind of electronic paper. The technological innovation is different from that of the text on the computer screen and has been aimed at creating a device as close to a real book as possible. What happens in the process is that you order your book, say the 900 pages of . It is downloaded onto the device in sixty seconds, to be stored there forever and to be read page by page when you want it. Also, the newspapers, magazines or journals that you subscribe for.

Is all this relevant for us in India? It is too early to tell. Besides its expense, there is also the need for fast and reliable broadband connection and the need for an operator to provide the service. It is an interesting aspect of both the shortening time span in technology adoption and the growing sophistication of the Indian consumer that the technology and the device are already available.

Looking ahead, think of all the school children saddled with books, voracious readers with huge appetites for current best sellers and so on, and you can see the potential one day in India.

For now, there are questions of affordability, the much cheaper costs of books in India, and the pirated books on the pavement at a fraction of the normal price, always a temptation.

As I write about e-books, I hear a familiar complaint. "But I like books, the way they are." I can only add: me too. But it is like saying that I like walking and do not need a car. But sometimes I do, for going far or fast. And whether I like it or not, motorised transport is a reality. So will be e-books.
