Car subwoofers how do I know what is good?

I am looking for subs for my car perferably 12's and I don't have a huge budget. I was wondering on the cheaper subwoofers does anyone know about them like plye, legacy and subs in the lower rang. Nothing like JL or kicker. Also I was wondering if a cheap amp at walmart might work? I want some bass to shake the car a little but don't want extreme bass. I want it to sound nice not to just shake the car.

most people want cheap car audio. which is fine. the problem is, that after they get there stuff, there disapointed, and thought it would be better then it really is. so having said that here is my advise to you.

first off, if you want a little bass, just so the lows in the car sound good, then get a 10". they generally sound better then 12s but are not as loud. there also cheaper. next is try to get a sub with a low rms. that way you dont need to get a big expensive amp. to get a sub with a limited budget, that doesnt sound like a*s, you need to resort to the internet. check out sites like www.woofersect.com. i know they have MB Quart woofers on sale right now. i thin there 70% off. also dont be afraid to buy a new sub off ebay. infact i recomend you buy a Boston Acoustics G2, a 10" or 12" is up to you, off ebay. they go for about $100. trust me, its worth a little extra money for it. you will not find a better sounding sub for less money. i can almost promise you that.

as far as amps, that is anther thing you really dont want to get too cheap on. cheap amps scare me. go with a good brand. this is where ebay comes into play. you can get amps for pretty cheap. take this JBL amp for example. hella cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-BP300-1-BP-300-1-Car-Audio-Amplifier-4-GA-wires_W0QQitemZ200040039789QQihZ010QQcategoryZ18797QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

good deals are out there. i'll put a link to the Boston sub on the bottom where i list my sources. save up a little money, and get stuff that doesnt suck. otherwise you will be unhappy and spend more and more money on a system. which over time, can be tons of money.

JL kicker Fosgate Phoenix Gold Eclipse PPI

you can learn the easy way or the hard way. I started with a 15" Jenson and a "Rockwood" amplifier i bought at a flea market.

look i know what you want to here. but i know better than to tell you to pick up some jenky sony xplode woofer and a kenwood amplifier.

the point is, installation is somewhat tedious, you're going to have to route RCAs/power/ground/remote, with that in mind, try and do it right the first time.

Do summers get hot where you live? You can fry eggs on junk amps, not to mention their circuit boards.

make sure you use at least 10 gauge power and ground, 8 if you want to play it safe.

Check out cardomain.com
Eclispes and clarions are nomally pretty good without breaking the bank.

Legacy sucks, stay away from Legacy and Pyramid. DO NOT buy one of those $50 speaker in a box sets from Wal Mart. Pioneer is a good brand for a decent price. I can promise you in car audio, you will always get what you pay for. and also, make sure you buy a good amp to push the 12's or you will have wasted your money. Pioneer makes good amps as well.

also, if you just want some bass, just buy 10's they are cheaper, would require a smaller amp, and will be all you would need.

Yeah the brand is really not as huge of a deal as installing it properly. I have had many systems from wal mart crap to Bose and infinit and as long as you have decent amount of power, and follow all of the manufacturers suggestions, it will sound nice overall. Just make sure your voice speakers sound good. For 12 inch subs, I would recommend at LEAST 500 watts. Look for an amp that has at least two 30 amp fuses on the side. A 500 watt amp that has one 20 amp fuse is going to sound like crap. Go to www.pricegrabber.com and/or www.crutchfield.com and read user reviews for the make and model you are looking for. Make sure you buy the correct wiring kit for the amount of power you expect out of an amp. You could have a 1,000 HP motor however if you give it a Honda Civic fuel line, it will run like a Honda Civic.

JL AUDIO. NO CONTEST. Go to your local circuit city or best buy, and check out the jl audio subs. you will be amazed. or if there's a local car audio shop around. hit them up.

Crossfire gives you a lot of bang for the buck, but dear God, don't shop at Walmart for an amp. Go to Circuit city at least.

**OLNY IF YOU WANT TO SPEND SOME SERIOUS CASH**

Hifonics XX-Goliath
5,000 watts Power Amplifier
one fore each, all together it cost me about 4g for it all...not bad if you ask me...not bad

Please do not think you will be saving money by buying from walmart. One week with that and it will be blown and you will just have to spend more money replacing it. Spend a little more and have better sound and quality. If you still want cheap, try Pheonix Gold. Its low end will survive most of what you will be doing to it. Alpine has Type E subwoofers. These are supprisingly strong and are really good at avoiding distortion while playing a wide frequency range. You can pick up two 12's and a M450 amp for about $299.

pioneer are good

Again its pretty much just preference, Ive been a big MTX fan for a while and a few of my friends have mtx subs and they all hit great. Plus their tech support is great if you ever have any problems, great customer service. If your looking for a little bass but not too much I would suggest a MTX 10" in a sledgehammer box, a single 10 doesnt sound like much but don't judge it until you hear it, my friend has one in a 1991 grand prix and its perfect.

good luck finding a decent woofer around the price range that pyle and legacy fall in. these manufacterers are very low end. heres a tip for you, if you can find a sub at best buy or circuit city (or similar stores) or its sold in the same store as low quality brands such as pyle, then chances are its no good. however i make an exception with the type-r i saw at best buy.
if you're not willing to spend the extra money however, buying a pyle (or similar) sub and a walmart amp will still work out for you, but dont buy a prefab box. get a box custom made or designed and make it yourself. the box will make a huge difference if its made right

What is the best brand of car subwoofers there is?

I wanted to know what was the best brand of car subwoofers there is. I was going to get a pair of hifonics subwoofers but i don't really know how they sound. I know JL's are really good when it comes to hard clean bass.

I too love my Infinity subwoofer.

I have an Infinity in my Mustang and its damn good. I can feel the virbation through the seat and sometimes the steering wheel.

Asking which sub is the best is like asking what type of pizza is better. Everyone has an oppinion on the subject. I like Planet Audio, Rockford fosgate, and Memphis audio personally.

The Kicker Solobarics are excellent! Very powerful and have a unique look.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mOfSmYQWSQ4/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=solobaric&i=2066S12L54

lol, depends on what your ears like. if you like the way JL sounds, your gonna love Boston Acoustics. check out there G5. it sounds better, and is louder then a w6, and it sounds better then a w7. personally i think JL is overhyped and overpriced. however, there are many great brands out there. try these brands too.

eclipse
kenwood excelon
mb quart
diamond audio

Well then ones i have are kicker and they sound pretty good.
Kicker is probably one of the best subwoofers i think.
I have 2 15inch Kicker subs and they sound really good and they hit hard.

Kicker is the best brand type to me.

what are the best car subwoofers on the market?

I want some really good subwoofers to make my car as aloud as possible. I might only buy one woofer if they are too expensive but I want the best one I can buy with no money limit. I have a little space limit I cant fit to big of a woofer box in my car.

Best woofer and money doesn't matter... RE XXX is all I have to say... it moves the most air for any 12 inch driver in the world (proven fact) the only reason I say this is because you said no money limit as they cost anywhere from $1,800 to $2,200 a piece... but they are IMO the best SPL and SQ driver on the market today

Good Luck

i am a huge fan of alpine type r, if you get a 12 inch sub it will be really loud. My entire system is made up of alpine products and i have had it for 4 years with no problems

The best is really relative, as some great sounding subs just sound bad for other people. I personally have used some really great sounding subs, as I too don't really like putting a price cap on my system. If you are looking for great sounding bass but can't afford the space (hehe) then go with Solobarics or JL Audio. But if you just want a monster and you don't have any space constraints, plus you have a whole lot to spend, go with the MTX Jackhammer. It's outrageously big, bad and will blow the skirt off anyone foolish enough to go near it! Hope I was of some help.

If you're tight on space, go with a MTX thunderform, the boxes are made specifically for certain cars, on mtx website they have it, u may also want to go with the rear deck mounting two 12's it is small as well

I ve had jl audio for over 7 yrs and they still f@#king bump now i just recely bought some new ones for my truck cuz three 12 dont fit in my truck but alpines type x in a 22hz ported box f@#king rock too good luck p.s. W7 are the best

If you want LOUD, then i would suggest..

RE XXX
FI BTL
Pioneer Premier

Those are the three I would look up for SPL. Theres more but those are my top choices.

Mr. Super, the pioneers accually have the world record for spl and that what he said he was looking for. For overall performance xxx is much better but he only said spl. And also there are subs that sound much better than the idmax. Like TC sounds

oh FFS people dont put a pioneer driver and an RE in the same catagory....

SPL the XXX has it
SQ its the IDMAXX
and my favorite for the best of both is the Adire Brahma

It depends what type of music you listen to. Subwoofers are designed for the listener in mind. I have one Alpine Type-R 12" 4ohm that I have bridged down to 2ohms that I think sounds awesome, but it isn't the nastiest one. If you listen to a lot of rock and want a good, clear sound, something like that or some good JL's will do you well. If you listen to a lot of rap or music that doesn't accentuate the bass as clearly, I don't think anybody does nasty, loud bass like a couple of MTX's will.

Also, the type of box you put them in and whether you use some polyfill or dynamat along with it will make just as much difference as the sub you put in it.

I would go with re audio

Like a few people have mentioned, everyones taste is a little different, as is everyone's ears. What I like, what you like, what anyone likes will all depend. Your best bet is to listen to as many different setups as you can and then make your decision. However, I can give you a list of companies I would recommend.

JL Audio, MTX, Kicker, Fosgate (p3 and higher), Memphis, Eclipse, RE, Diamond Audio, Soundstream, Hifonics

Now, these are just a few, the list goes on and on. Pretty much if you stick with a respectable sub/amp company you'll be okay. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions. Or if you want, send me the info on your car, what kind of music you listen to, what kind of sound your looking for (SQ, SPL, deep bass, tight bass, a combination), and a price limit and I'll put together some packages that might interest you.

Can I hook up my car subwoofers to my surround sound in my home?

I have Pyramid Power 15' car subwoofers... is there anyway I can hook them up to my Yamaha reciever in my home?

car is 2-4ohm................... House8ohm

You can. sound not too good

Not worth it you can buy a nice home sub for less than the converter to run your amp off of your home power outlet.

i dont see y you couldnt

Yes, You didn't specify ohms. I need more detail to tell you how to do it.

yes if there is wire runnig that you can hook up

Short answer - Yes.

Though I dont know the tecnial aspect, a speaker is a speaker...you just need the power to push it. For a Sub, obviously you'll need a decent amp, and I know you can buy home theater amps at some of the nicer stereo stores, but I'm sure you could find one at a place like Best Buy. I dont know how much power your reciever puts out, but if its too low you'll know it :).

you can but it would probably be better to buy a sub thats made for home systems, they have boxes that are made for bigger rooms. but if you really want to you could hook up ur subs. i dont know if those are 2 or 4 ohms, or single or double voice coil. but either way, if your goin to be hooking up the subs to a home system amp, you have to hook up the subs to the amp so their in a 8 ohm load. if their 2 ohms, u gotta hook up 4 subs in series to one channel, if their 4 ohms u gotta hook up 2 in series. but if you want to use a car amp, your either gunna have to find or build a power converter that will lower the voltage to 12-14 volts. and if you decide to do that, you can hook up the subs just like you would in your car.

Yes, it's possible, but you gotta make sure your sub isn't wired down pass 4 ohm, otherwise your reciever will go into protect mode. I also suggest you hook up a home sub instead of a car sub. They both are built differently and the home sub will sound alot better. Good Luck.

well yes they will work, but you should build each sub in a band pass box. 2cu ft on the sealed side, 1cu ft on the ported side speaker facing the port side, two round ports 3in by 6in long facing the same direction. they will be very efficient and crossover all on there own, about 120Hz this should work fine. Good luck.

Specifically, how do i use car subwoofers in home?

So, if i have a standard in-home receiver and I go out and buy two 15" car subwoofers, could I use them to enhance my stereo system? Pretend you're talking to a kid, because i know very little about this stuff. The only thing i know is that I have to hook up the subs in series, not parallel.

Yes but no. That is, you could make it work but there's several problems.

1) Car audio subs are un-powered and will require external amp's.

2) Often car subs require external crossover networks. That's the dowamahicy that divides the low & high sounds It must have the proper specs or it will sound poor and could damage the cheap speakers.

3) You will need an enclosure for your speaker. The enclosure should be built to a spec that provides proper porting, volume and isulation.

And there's a few more. Given the cost and knowledge base one would expend and need to use an improper porduct for the aplication, I'd head to the local electronics shop and pick up a sub for home use.

Good luck.

Don't bother, car subs are made for music, loud boomy music, they can't handle home theater applications, they suck. the sound is horrible because those subs WILL overpower all the other speakers. This is what you do, you put your subs on ebay, then you take that money, and go to circuit city and get a good sub

What are good, cheapish car subwoofers/speakers?

Just got a new car and I'm trying to think of ideas to ask for a Christmas present. Can anyone give me some ideas/tips of what I should buy in terms of subwoofers and speakers? Doesn't have to be insanely loud or anything like that, just something decent and preferably in the cheap category as far as expenses.

*Oh, it's an 02 Dodge Neon.

Pioneer is cheap and better than all brands listed above.

Is buying car subwoofers on Ebay a good ideal?

I searched on Ebay and found "new" Kicker subwoofers for a very low price. Can I trust Ebay to buy working car amps and speakers?

I don't see a big problem with purchasing car audio off of e-bay. I would make sure that the seller has a good rating with plenty of car audio sales and at least 98% positive feedback. I would also read the listing to see whether the products are new, "like-new", used, or refurbished. If it doesn't say, I would e-mail the seller and find out. I would e-mail them anyways just to make sure its not refurbished.

Also, pay with Paypal. With Paypal you are guaranteed to get what you pay for or you get your money back.

whats the difference between car subwoofers and car tweeters and car speakers?

i just want to know whats the difference between car subwoofers and car tweeters and car speakers?

Subwoofer produce only the lowest bass notes. Typically 100Hz and below.

Tweeters reproduce only the highest notes - typically 6000Hz and above.

and speakers in general are, well, speakers. Woofers, subwoofers, and tweeters are all speakers. They are just specialty speakers and utilized for specific purposes. When you see "speakers" in general, they are usually compound speakers - utilizing a woofer and tweeter on the same frame. These are considered "full range" and are usually spec'd to cover the full audio range (considered to be 20Hz to 20kHz)

Car Subwoofers?

i am looking to get 2 10" rockford fosgates into my car. i am also buying 4 speakers, 2 for the door and 2 for the back. the only thing i am not sure about is what kind of amp i should get. i dont know if i should get a 2 channel or a 4 channel.
your help would be greatly appreciated.
Jay, instead of getting two 2 channel amps cant i just get one 4 channel amp to save a little bit of money?

i have 2 10's powered by a 300watt Rockford fosgate 2 channel amp. it does a great job. if you are going to power your other 4 speakers with the amp as well you may want the 4 channel

How to hook up Car subwoofers and amp in my home theater?

I have two 4 ohm subs and a 900 watt RMS (at 2Ohms) amp. I was planning on wiring them in parallel down to my 2 ohms when i set them up in my car, (but i wont get that until fall) so i want to put them to use by hooking them into my home theater system. Can I do this?

make sure your entertainment center receiver can supply / support enough wattage first...

get you a set of wires and 2 RCA or HDMI or composite plugs....cut the wires and make your own wires to plug set...then plug them into the receiver...and you're done...really not that hard

What the tech industry can learn from Detroit CNET

At the show I scurried from one car debut to another--finished products such as the Honda CR-Z and concepts such as the Hyundai Blue-Will , and Volkswagen New Compact Coupe .

All these launches--and there were many more I missed--had something in common: drama. Cars were hidden under covers, behind doors, and underneath stages. Executive speeches reached their crescendos as the new model was unveiled, rolled out, or popped up through a hatch in the stage. Spotlights flooded the stage. Camera flashes flashed. Fog machines fogged. Subwoofers throbbed.

All these theatrics should leave a seasoned reporter unmoved, right? Well, I didn't want to leap out of my seat to buy anything, but I have to say the antics were very effective at focusing attention to the matter at hand. In stark contrast to demos of new development platforms and multicore scalability I've seen at tech events, nobody in the thronging press had any doubt about when to roll the cameras and to shoot the photos.

I'm not saying Dell's problems would be solved if it just unveiled its next PC with some fireworks and unicycling bears. Rather, those auto show highlight moments were emblematic of a more sophisticated understanding of what makes potential customers tick and therefore how to get them excited about buying stuff.

Cars have a more visceral, emotional appeal than a lot of tech products. Humans often see their vehicles as an expression of their own selves--their strength, speed, status, success, or style. I think part of that is human nature--but part of it is the byproduct of decades of effective marketing, too.

Revving the Apple excitement engine

Apple's ability to make that sales pitch is eased by the fact that the company doesn't concern itself overmuch with catering to the highest volume markets where profit margins are slim and product differentiation is harder. But still, I see people express an emotional attachment to Apple products that I rarely see with DVD players, mobile phones, video cameras, Windows PCs, and other mainstream electronics products.

When you're buying an application server or a wireless network router, it's generally a pretty utilitarian choice, driven more by spec sheets, benchmark scores, and price-performance trade-offs. But it looks to me as if that method of promoting and selling that sort of product has carried over to market segments that could well grow beyond it.

To some extent, this is happening.

Advanced Micro Devices and Intel are de-emphasizing processor frequencies and trying to tout real-world benefits. Systems like the Hewlett-Packard Envy and Dell Adamo embody their makers' aspirations to build something that people wouldn't be ashamed to have lying around when the dinner guests come. Sony, which still seems to be coasting on brand power built up years ago, has shown signs of grasping a lifestyle sales pitch.

Amazon positions the Kindle as a gateway to everything good about reading, a task made easier by the fact that it isn't freighted with the general-purpose baggage a PC must carry. Yahoo's $100 million "You" campaign emphasizes people, not the value of open application programming interfaces. And I think the Windows "I'm a PC" ads function reasonably well at reassuring Windows users that they're unassuming, regular folk rather than uppity snobs.

Most curious in the lifestyle-vs-features marketing spectrum is the Motorola Droid, a higher-end Android phone. To me, the "Droid Does" ads are on the one hand old-school tech marketing, a boast that its feature list is longer. But then on the other hand, it also strikes me that it's a lifestyle sales pitch geared for those who want to show they're in the tech in-crowd--the kind of person who wants to say he doesn't need any coddling from Apple.

Putting the Focus on a single feature

Yet the sales pitch during the press conference was still about a prospective customer's image. My translation: "Buying this car shows you're a person of good judgment, someone who recognizes good value but still knows a sharp-looking car."

In case there was any doubt, technical details were subordinate to the single feature Ford wanted us to remember: better fuel economy. Shown on a giant screen that bisected an entire basketball arena, the other features were reduced to dim text while the point about better mileage glowed orange. Executive Chairman Bill Ford himself delivered the message.

Another example: Toyota's FT-CH hybrid concept car , which looked to me like a cross between a Prius and something from the company's Scion line aimed at younger buyers. Toyota's pitch: the car is designed "to capture the high-energy style of the 8-bit generation" of the 1980s, a retro design for those who grew up with the blocky graphics and bright, simple music of Nintendo video games like Super Mario Brothers 3 and Mega Man II .

As the debut moment approached, chirpy music blared and retro graphics flashed, then the car emerged from hiding. Frankly, I found it all silly and had to restrain myself from rolling my eyes. But on further reflection, I decided Toyota deserved credit for trying to find a way to appeal to younger customers by appealing to their proto-nostalgia for a peppy part of their childhood rather than saying, in effect, "This subcompact is optimized for a person of your limited budget."

I'm not sure how easy it will be for the electronics industry to appeal to buyers' gut instincts. Many gadgets have short shelf lives compared to cars and just aren't big enough to project much of any image. A lot of devices really are tools without much capacity to appeal to mainstream passions. About the only emotion connected to today's lower-end, nearly disposable digital cameras is what you find in the photos you see on the screen.

Nevertheless, I think there's room for improvement. The electronics industry is in its infancy in some ways, still lacking the generations of history cars enjoy. Yet electronics can be as empowering as personal transportation in their own way. The social dimension of new devices opens innumerable opportunities for appeals to our gut instincts rather than our spreadsheet analyses.

I expect the transition to happen, and as it does, I'm sure nerdy types such as myself will be annoyed at all the feel-good fluffy vagueness of it all and run back to our lists of speeds and feeds.

But in the big picture, I consider it healthy. It could help in the shift from an era of humans adapting to electronics to one that's the other way around.

CES: Visteon brings home audio sound into the car CNET News (blog)

LAS VEGAS--Good audio has become a major selling point in cars , and automakers are signing up partners from the high-end audio world in droves. But Visteon's technology makes it unnecessary to throw all those speakers and amps in new cars.

Visteon is working with SRS Labs, a company that provides audio-shaping software for home theater systems, to improve audio in cars. SRS Labs' software and Visteon's hardware, which processes digital signals, add virtual subwoofers and 5.1-channel surround sound to even the most basic in-car audio systems.

We sat through a demo of the system in a Ford S-Max, a European test-platform, and listened to tracks played through multiple audio profiles. The S-Max itself had a simple six-speaker system, with woofers in the doors and tweeters on the A-pillars.

The two-channel audio profile raised the audio level so it seemed to be emanating at head level, and staged it across the dashboard, so it seemed we were sitting in the front row at a concert.

A virtual subwoofer enhanced low-frequency audio, bringing a very rich bass sound out of the standard speakers.

The most impressive audio profile used the virtual subwoofer and additional psycho-acoustic programming to create a very realistic surround sound experience. The audio was lifted up, as with the two-channel profile, and seemed to emanate from all around the car. The audio can also be set to put the sweet spot on any seat in the car.

This audio system will be available in any car that uses Visteon's DSP.

Detroit Auto Show: Nelly's Custom Ford Mustang New York Times (blog)

Lawyers for the rapper Nelly will be busy defending speeding tickets if his predictions come true. Nelly and Jim Farley, vice president of marketing for Ford, showed off Nelly’s custom Mustang GT, which will appear on the cover of his coming album on Tuesday at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

“I already called my lawyers to get them on deck for more tickets,” Nelly said to the crowd at the Ford stand, around a new Mustang GT 5-liter. The St. Louis native is a car collector, with an impressive collection of luxury cars. He said he has been waiting for Ford to reproduce the iconic 5.0 engine. When he met with Mr. Farley last year in a visit to the Ford design center, Nelly gave him his feedback.

“It’s great when you are throwing ideas and the big shots listen,” Nelly said with a charming grin. “The 5.0 is epitome of the muscle car as it should be.”

The custom car was produced by Dub magazine and flaunts suede and leather and two 12-inch subwoofers. Ford is the title sponsor of the Dub Show Tour beginning on Friday at the Charity Preview in the Cobo Center.

“The Mustang hasn’t been promoted in the African-American and Latino cultures and yet it still needs to stay true to its performance heritage, so we gave it that street styling, said Myles Kovacs, president and co-founder of Dub magazine.
